Tagus Press, the publishing arm of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, announces the publication of News on the American Dream: A History of the Portuguese Press in the United States by Alberto Pena Rodríguez, translated by Serena J. Rivera with Gloria Sá and with a foreword by Frank F. Sousa.

News on the American Dream traces the development of the Portuguese-American press from its beginnings in the late nineteenth century to the present, taking readers from the East Coast to Hawaii, with strategic stops in places with large Portuguese-speaking communities, such as New Bedford, Oakland, and Newark. This nuanced analysis of the political, economic, social, and cultural roles played by these publications demonstrates their importance to the Portuguese-American community and the history of the ethnic press in the United

States. Fascinating narratives about the founders, editors, and owners of these publications—and their challenges, squabbles, and successes—round out this engaging and meticulously researched study that offers a unique perspective on the history of the Portuguese diaspora in the United States.

In 2013 he was the Hélio and Amélia Pedroso/Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies in the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and in 2017 he was the Michael Teague FLAD/ Brown Visiting Professor in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University.
