Lecture by Márcia Rego, "Portuguese Disturbed: The Contested Sovereignty of the Cape Verdean Language"

The Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture/Tagus Press and the Department of Portuguese announce the upcoming lecture "Portuguese Disturbed: The Contested Sovereignty of the Cape Verdean Language" by Dr. Márcia Rego.

The Lecture: Weaving together an historical analysis and ethnographic sketches of contemporary life, this talk explores the role of language in the formation of Cape Verdean national identity and the complexities of building a national language from an oral “Creole” that is rooted in a slavery-based colonial past.

 

Márcia Rego is a Cultural Anthropologist and Associate Professor of the Practice at Duke University. She is the author of The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde: Slavery, Language and Ideology, by Lexington Books.
