General description: The Department of Luso-Hispanic Studies at Middlebury College is looking for an Assistant in Portuguese for academic year 2026-2027. This is a multifaceted position that combines organizational and extracurricular responsibilities with the opportunity to undertake coursework at Middlebury College. The ideal candidate would be an MA or equivalent with a keen interest in language instruction and pedagogy, as well as native or near-native fluency in Portuguese and fluency in English. In addition to a standard honorarium ($21/hour), the Assistant in Portuguese receives full tuition for one course in each semester (fall and spring), full room and board for the academic year, student health and dental insurance (subject to the regular deductibles), and the cost of airfare to and from Middlebury College. 

Responsibilities: The Assistant in Portuguese will live in the Brooks Michel '59 House, a small student dormitory with students who have made a commitment to speak only Portuguese. They will share meals with students at the Portuguese-language table. They will encourage the use of Portuguese by offering support in the language and by organizing cultural and recreational activities that will promote Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures. These activities might include—but are not limited to—movie and television screenings, “cafezinhos,” guest talks, cooking classes, theme parties, etc. The Assistant in Portuguese will assist the faculty of the Portuguese program by assisting instruction at the beginning level and leading conversation sections at the intermediate level. Additionally, the Assistant in Portuguese might substitute classes during the fall and spring semesters for faculty away at conferences.
