1st APEAA Doctoral Symposium

University of Lisbon – June 24th, 2024

Call for Proposals:

The Portuguese Association for Anglo-American Studies (APEAA) invites doctoral students working in areas related to English and American studies to take part in an in-person Doctoral Symposium, to be held at the University of Lisbon, on June 24th, 2024, as part of the annual APEAA Conference “Transitions: Freedom & Conflicts” (25th-26th of June 2024). This Doctoral Symposium intends to bring together students affiliated with Portuguese universities, allowing them to present their doctoral research, exchange ideas with peers, and receive feedback from specialists in their fields (Mentors). The Doctoral Symposium will also serve as a platform for networking and sharing experiences as early career academic researchers in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Symposium presentations should deal with the main themes of the students’ doctoral research in areas related to English and American studies, mentioning any preliminary results obtained, methodologies applied, as well as any challenges they may be currently facing. Each 10-minute presentation will be followed by a 15-minute discussion, during which participants will receive feedback from experienced scholars in their field, as well as from their peers.

Participants may present their research in one of the following strands:

• Literatures in English and Literary Theory
• Cultural Studies, including Visual, Media, Film, Performance, and Music Studies

Submission Guidelines

Proposals for 10-minute presentations in English must be submitted through this Google form by April 7th, 2024. Submissions must include the title of the candidate’s ongoing doctoral project, a 500-word abstract, and a 100-word bio note. All proposals for the APEAA Doctoral Symposium must be submitted through the Google form above, otherwise they will not be considered for this year’s symposium. Successful Doctoral Symposium applicants will be notified by May 3rd, 2024, and will be exempt from the fee for the APEAA Conference (25th-26th June 2024).

We encourage APEAA Doctoral Symposium applicants to submit paper proposals for the thematic sessions (“Transitions: Freedom & Conflicts”) of the general APEAA Conference. If Doctoral Symposium applicants are also interested in submitting a proposal to the APEAA Conference, they must follow the submission guidelines specified in the main Conference’s call for papers, which can be found on the official APEAA website.
