CFP: Modernisms in Portuguese for Portuguese Cultural Studies (deadline 3/20/25)

Fernando Guimarães (2007) elucidates the intrinsic connection between avant-gardes and the overarching paradigm of Modernism. Within the rich tapestry of the Portuguese language, seminal movements such as Orpheu, Futurism, Brazilian Modernism, Surrealism, and Concretism emerge as pivotal in shaping the artistic and literary landscape during the first half of the twentieth century. Moreover, the unprecedented works by Fernando Pessoa and his heteronyms, Oswald de Andrade’s anthropophagy and Pau-Brasil manifesto, Brazilian regionalism and Portuguese neo-realism, Cabo Verdean Claridade movement, Surrealism, and the vast realms of visual poetry via Brazilian Concretism and the Portuguese Po.Ex. exemplify the distinctiveness inherent within the modernist discourse emanating from Portuguese-speaking writers and artists. However, in discussions of Global Modernisms, a limited number of these expressions and movements in Portuguese receive attention.

In light of this vibrant heritage of Luso-Afro-Brazilian modernisms, Portuguese Cultural Studies, a peer-reviewed and open access journal, invites scholarly contributions that delve into the multifaceted dimensions of modernist literature and art across Portuguese-speaking territories. Potential avenues for exploration encompass, yet are not confined to, the following thematic domains:

  • Blackness and Race

  • Decoloniality

  • Literature/Art and Politics

  • National Identity

  • Queer Studies

  • Intermedial Studies

  • Transatlantic and/or hemispheric dialogues

  • Women writers and artists

Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, and creative works will also be considered.

Articles in English or Portuguese should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (not including notes and bibliography). Reviews of monographs and edited volumes from the last 3 years on Modernism in Portuguese-speaking countries are also welcome. Book reviews should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.

Articles and book reviews should follow the latest version of the MLA guidelines and be sent by March 20, 2025 to the guest editors for this special issue, Tania Martuscelli (tania.martuscelli@colorado.edu) and Krista Brune (kbrune@psu.edu).
