O seminário marcará a recente publicação da monografia de Stephanie Dennison Remapping Brazilian Film Culture in the 21st Century (Routledge) e será seguido de uma receção/lançamento do livro de vinhos (às 17h30) e a exibição do documentário de Lucia Nagib e Samuel Paiva sobre o Cinema Brasileiro, Passagens (2019).

This seminar will reflect on the key features of Brazilian film culture in the first twenty years of the 21st century and discuss the dramatic challenges currently facing filmmakers in the new decade. Brazil’s film industry is the world’s 10th largest and over the course of the last two decades, thanks in large part to state support for cultural production and diversification initiatives, a growing number of female, Afro-Brazilian and indigenous filmmakers have come to the fore making striking short and feature-length films. However, outside Brazil and beyond breakout art-house hits such as Kleber Mendonca Filho’s Aquarius and Bacurau, contemporary production remains underexamined by scholars and critics. And as the current Brazilian government moves steadily away from both diversity agendas and state support for the film industry, Brazilian film culture appears to be under considerable threat.

The event will include reflexive interventions from Stephanie Dennison, Professor of Brazilian Studies and Director of the Centre for World Cinemas at the University of Leeds, Lúcia Nagib, Professor of Film at the University of Reading and Marcelo Ikeda, filmmaker, critic, lecturer and CAPES-funded PhD researcher at the University of Reading.

The seminar will mark the recent publication of Stephanie Dennison’s monograph Remapping Brazilian Film Culture in the 21st Century (Routledge) and will be followed by a wine reception/book launch (at 17:30) and the screening of Lucia Nagib and Samuel Paiva’s documentary on Brazilian Cinema, Passages (2019).
