The narcotic of nationalism: the Portuguese far-right and the symbol(ism)s of Empire
Camões Annual Lecture

The narcotic of nationalism: the Portuguese far-right and the symbol(ism)s of Empire.
Rúben Leitão Serém (University of Nottingham) dissects the resurgence of the Portuguese far-right, embodied by the political party Chega, through the prism of history, memorialisation, and myth. The lecture focuses on three case-studies located in Lisbon, which are a matter of ongoing public dispute: the gardens situated in Empire Square, the statue of Father António Vieira, and the Monument to the Discoveries. The lecture will conclude by explaining the reasons why the far-right is waging – and winning – this culture war. In this sense, the past is very present.
