A Universidade do Kansas em Lawrence recruta um docente de Português (Portuguese Lecturer/Academic Program Asociate), em tempo integral, por um período limitado de um ano, a começar em agosto de 2022.  A candidatura selecionada ministrará 2-3 cursos e coordenará o programa de língua portuguesa. É exigido um doutoramento em Português ou em uma área relevante (ou mestrado e experiênci de ensino), fluência nativa ou quase nativa em português, e um excelente conhecimento da literatura e cultura brasileiras.

Position Overview

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Kansas (KU) is searching for a Portuguese Language Lecturer/Academic Program Associate, with a start date of August 18, 2022.

The Department is seeking someone with experience in Portuguese language instruction, who can teach all levels of Portuguese language as well as lower levels of literature and culture courses. Ability to teach Spanish language is a plus. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a 2-3 course load of language and culture classes and participating in departmental service. As Academic Program Associate, the person we hire will coordinate the 100 and 200 level courses in Portuguese and help to recruit Portuguese students on our campus and beyond. The successful candidate will work with Portuguese faculty to help to grow Portuguese language as well as Lusophone studies at KU, assisting in the promotion of all activities organized by the department, such as Portuguese language tables and study abroad programs.

Job Description

75% - Lecturer:

  1. Teach nine to ten credits per semester of 100-699 levels of Portuguese language.

  2. Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the program associate/ lecturer must make arrangements for an appropriate substitute. Classes should not be cancelled.

  3. Provide instruction throughout the semester, develop appropriate material for class sessions, grade assignments in a timely manner, provide students with regular and precise information about their progress in the course, and give students clear information about how to improve their performance in the course.

  4. Hold regular office hours for students in the classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. The program associate/ lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.

  5. Keep a detailed and well-organized grade record of all evaluations of student work in the course. All these materials should be made available to the Department at the close of the semester.

  6. Maintain standards of excellence in teaching and in the evaluation of student performance.

  7. Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.

25% - Academic Program Associate

  1. Serve as coordinator of 100 and 200 level courses in Portuguese.

  2. Manage and support other instructors in the use of course technology.

  3. Coordinate the selection of common course materials shared by all instructors at the 100 and 200 level. Update established materials such as the course syllabus, class plans, exam guides, and rubrics and grading criteria. 

  4. Oversee the preparation of common exams and final exams; develop schedule for all major exams; develop schedule for make-up exams and proctors for make-up exams. 

  5. Organize materials for distribution to all instructors. 

  6. Manage inquiries related to the undergraduate Portuguese language program and assist students in the program with any concerns. 

  7. Organize peer communication among instructors to facilitate the development and sharing of teaching materials. 

  8. Mentor instructors teaching the 100 and 200 level courses; organize and oversee peer mentoring program for instructors, as needed. 

  9. Manage attendance reports during first two weeks of classes in order to oversee the administrative "drop" of students who fail to meet departmental attendance policy requirements. Later in the semester, oversee implementation of attendance and confirm documentation for absences. 

  10. Work with Portuguese faculty to help plan the short to long-term development of the Portuguese program.

  11. Work with Portuguese faculty to help promote Portuguese language and Brazilian studies activities in our campus and beyond.

  12. Serve on one relevant department committee that pertains to language development, curriculum development, study abroad, or undergraduate studies.

  13. Attend faculty meetings.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in curriculum vitae, and (2) information provided from professional references.

  1. Ph.D. in Portuguese or relevant field.  Candidates with an M.A. will also be considered with additional teaching experience required.

  2. Native or near native proficiency in Portuguese.

  3. Excellent knowledge of Brazilian Literature and culture.

  4. Excellent communication skills in Portuguese and English.
