Academic Program Specialist for the Portuguese Language

Summary of Duties     

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese, within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks an Academic Program Specialist for the Portuguese Language Program to join our team.

This position will provide coordination for Portuguese Language Program within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. The successful candidate will promote and coordinate the Portuguese language program and teach up to three courses per year, to include beginning and intermediate courses in Portuguese and/or beginning courses in Spanish; collaborate with faculty in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese to review and promote the Portuguese language program; identify trends and areas for improvement make recommendations to Chair; oversee design and implementation; coordinate and assist with recruiting activities for undergraduate students including outreach activities, workshops, and other language-related events; participate in committees related to the Portuguese language program. Anticipated position appointment length up to two academic years, to commence summer 2019, with the possibility of renewal.

The Ohio State University is one of the few U.S. institutions authorized by Brazil’s Instituto Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (INEP) to oversee the Celpe-Bras examination of Portuguese language proficiency. Several initiatives designed to raise enrollments and encourage innovative instruction in multiple modalities, including through distance education, programs abroad, and partnerships with K-12 teachers around Ohio have been made possible by recent Title VI funding. We seek a candidate who excels at teaching and administration to help launch these initiatives and advance the Portuguese Language Program to national prominence.

Required Qualifications     

Master’s degree in Portuguese, SLA/Applied Linguistics, or related discipline; Native or near-native fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, and English is expected.

Desired Qualifications     

Ph.D. in Portuguese, SLA/Applied Linguistics, or related field; experience teaching Portuguese to Spanish speakers; demonstrated effectiveness in leadership and supervision of language programs at the post-secondary level; commitment to using online course management systems (e.g. Pearson’s MyLab, Canvas, etc.) and software applications related to second language teaching; knowledge of the ACTFL and Celpe-Bras proficiency scales and their application to FL programs; experience working with K-12 educators; record of scholarship related to the duties of this position.
