The Camões Language Center at UMass Boston is pleased to announce the Literature in Portuguese Language Conference 2019: “Gender in Lusophone Literature.” This conference aims to highlight key debates from the concepts of the construction of the gendered dimensions of Contemporary Lusophone Literature. To that end, the Conference will facilitate conversations surrounding gender and power, as well as their impact at the individual, community, institutional, state, and multilateral levels. Through these conversations, the conference hopes to deepen participants’ understanding of the relevance of gender in relation to status, access, and influence in all areas of international relations. The Conference seeks to reiterate the importance of applying an intersectional lens towards these issues and challenges, given that gender and power intersect and are enmeshed within other aspects of identity, such as class, citizenship, and sexuality. The main focus of this analysis is to reflect on what these authors in these three spheres of Lusophone production may think, how they think, and ultimately how they articulate their perspectives on this theme in the literary canon. Whether by way of juxtaposition or simple comparison, the visions of these various Portuguese-language writers will be put into contact and conversation with each other.

We will be celebrating cultures, identities, and diversity in the Portuguese-speaking world by tracing the roots of the Lusophone concept and discourse.

Writers, academic researchers, scholars, teachers, students, community members, and everyone who is interested in the aforementioned questions and ideas will create a memorable debate on the literature of the Lusophone world and the challenges of its effective interpretation.
