Transnational Africas: Visual, Material and Sonic Cultures of Lusophone Africa
Editors: Christopher LarkoshMario Pereira and Memory Holloway

The next volume of Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies (PLCSfocuses on the visual, material and sonic cultures of Lusophone Africa from the pre-colonial period to the contemporary moment.

With issues already dedicated to the literaturescultures and other expressive traditions of Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde, this upcoming issue allows us to revisit cultural production in general and visual, material and sonic culture in particular in these three countries and in São Tomé and Príncipe and Guinea-Bissau, as well as local areascross-border regionspolitical systems and historical periods that do not belong to neat categories and spaces where Portuguese enjoys official status. Although the Portuguese language, as well as literature and political discourse in Portuguese, continues to shape discussions on cultural identity within Lusophone Africa, visual, material and sonic culture questions the primacy of language and literature and provides alternative models for national identities and the division of space within the linguistic frameworks predicated by institutions such as the CPLP or Lusofonia. Moreover, the transnational circulation of art and artistsmusic and musicians, cinema and video, etc., encourages a more flexible and nuanced approach to (trans-)national identity. The study of visual, material and sonic cultural production complicates current understandings of Lusophone Africa that are based on colonial and post-independence national borders.

Do other, more fluid paradigms of identity emerge from the study of visual, material and sonic culture and forms of expression? How does such creative expression allow for a divergent vision of Africa, one in which ideasimages and other forms of material and sonic production can cross boundariesreshape cultural spaces, and contest subsequent interpretations of African art, culture and music that remain to these official linguistic and cultural paradigmsSuch questions are encouraged, but we welcome a variety of other interests and approaches.

Themes to be addressed in this issue may include:

  • Visual, material and sonic culture and language(s)
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and national identities
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and politics, war, and independence
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and citizenship
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and colonial/postcolonial relations
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and concepts of Lusophone/Africa
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and technology
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and “race,” diaspora, the “South Atlantic”
  • Visual, material and sonic culture and genders and sexualities
  • Transnational/global frameworks (productionexhibitiondisseminationconsumption)
  • Cross-cultural exchange and circulation
  • New media, musicvideo, dance, performance, photography, cinema, etc.
  • Discourse and publication (promotioncriticismscholarship)

The deadline for submission is May 31, 2017. We encourage authors to submit articles in English or Portuguese. We continue to welcome submissions for the non-thematic sections of the journalSubmissions must conform to the journal’s guidelineswhich are available at http://www.portstudies.umassd.edu/plcs/managing.htm
