Do protesto contra ditaduras militares a denúncias de toda sorte de problemas sociais, a música popular no mundo lusófono tem, historicamente, servido como poderoso instrumento de protesto, tornando-se, assim, ferramenta essencial para a compreensão das sociedades que têm o português como língua oficial.  

Este dossiê propõe agregar artigos sobre a música popular de qualquer país de fala portuguesa, de qualquer época e de qualquer gênero musical, que abordem processos políticos e históricos nos países em questão. Serão especialmente bem-vindos artigos que tenham como foco questões de gênero, raça e classe social. O dossiê está aberto a abordagens das mais diversas áreas, tais como a etnomusicologia, a antropologia, a sociologia, a história, a linguística, os estudos culturais, bem como artigos que abordem o uso da música popular no ensino de língua portuguesa, seja como língua materna, língua de herança, ou língua estrangeira. Artigos poderão ser escritos em português ou em inglês.

“Popular Music in the Lusophone World: Politics, History, and Social Change”

From protests against military dictatorships and the denunciation of various social issues, popular music in the Lusophone world has historically served as a powerful instrument of protest, thus becoming an essential tool for the understanding of the societies that have Portuguese as their official language. 

This dossier will gather articles about popular music from any Portuguese-speaking country, from any period and from any musical genre, which approach political and historical processes in the countries in question. Articles that focus on questions of gender, race, and social class will be especially welcome. Articles from various disciplines will be considered, including but not limited to ethnomusicology, sociology, history, linguistics, and cultural studies, as well as articles that deal with the use of popular music in the teaching of the Portuguese language, whether as a mother tongue, a heritage, or a foreign language. Articles may be written in Portuguese or in English.  

Deadline for submission: March 15, 2024.
