The Department of Spanish and Portuguese invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Contemporary Brazilian Cultural and Literary Studies. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on film studies, performance, or visual arts. Candidates must demonstrate an active research agenda, possess a strong theoretical and/or critical orientation, and be committed to high-quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Scholars whose work engages Brazilian literary and cultural studies, film, visual arts and music of the twentieth and twenty-first century are encouraged to apply. Interest in Afro-Brazilian culture, as well as ability to establish connections with other regions of the Portuguese-speaking world, or with other areas of the Americas will be given particular consideration given existing programs within and outside the department (e.g. our new PhD program in Portuguese, the undergraduate major and minor in Portuguese, the minor in Andean and Amazonian Studies, and our connections with the departments of Music and African American and African Studies, etc.).

Qualifications: Field of specialization is open, but research and teaching interests should complement those of existing faculty in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Fluency in English and at least one other language of Latin America is strongly desired. Successful candidates will have a PhD in hand by the time of appointment in August 2017. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
