The Faculty of Modern Languages at Heidelberg University, Germany, and the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies invite applications for a non-tenured position as

Junior Professor (W1) “Communication Studies: Information Society in Ibero-America” [PDF]

to be filled as soon as possible.

The appointment is initially for four years. After a positive evaluation, an extension for a further two years is planned. Provided that the general conditions laid down in civil service and budgetary law are met, the successful candidate can be appointed as a temporary civil servant. The junior professorship is based at the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS) and affiliated with the Faculty of Modern Languages. The HCIAS is a central research and teaching institution at Heidelberg University, at which Ibero-America-related research by different university colleges (faculties) converges, offering a unique range of expertise to address interdisciplinary issues concerning this region. The selected candidate is expected to teach and pursue research in the field of communication studies, with a specialization in the area of Latin America. More especially, he/she is expected to carry out individual and cooperative teaching and research activities focused on the development of the information society, on the media and social networks and on the social and cultural effects of communicative interaction, both in Latin America and in more global contexts related to this region. The successful candidate will also share the rights and duties of the Faculty of Modern Languages (academic self-governance, teaching, examinations). S/he will teach in the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs of the HCIAS and the Institute of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Modern Languages. The teaching load is two courses per semester before, and three courses per semester after, successful evaluation. The evaluation regulations can be accessed through the Human Resources Division of Heidelberg University.

In accordance with section 51 Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Württemberg (the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act), the successful candidate is expected to have an excellent Ph.D. or doctorate in communication studies, media research or a closely related field, teaching experience and teaching skills in English, as well as an excellent publication and promising research record in the relevant field(s). Profound knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese as well as of German is an asset.

For applicants who have held academic positions in Germany before or after their doctorate, doctoral and pre-/post-doctoral employment phases together should not exceed six years.
