Migration and Mill Work Conference – UMass Dartmouth, MA

Migration and Mill Work é uma conferência multidisciplinar que visa fornecer uma visão geral do trabalho do trabalho do migrante através de uma discussão extensa sobre o assentamento e o desenvolvimento das comunidades portuguesas iniciais na Nova Inglaterra, com foco nos trabalhadores nas fábricas de têxteis e manufatura em Massachusetts e Rhode Island a partir do final do século XIX. O evento acontece nos dias 3, 4 e 5 de dezembro de 2017 em Massachusetts e Rhode Island. As inscrições são gratuitas. Os interessados poderão enviar as suas propostas até dia 10 de outubro.

Os organizadores convidam para a submissão de propostas sobre temas como comunidades e grupos étnicos; classe e cultura na Nova Inglaterra industrial; trabalho e condições de vida; racializações, categorizações e identidades; histórias sociais das comunidades; entre outros.

A conferência servirá como uma reunião de trabalho para a organização de um volume editado sobre o tema para o projeto The Color of Labour: the Racialized Lives of Migrants (ERC Advanced Grant). Os autores dos trabalhos aceitos serão convidados a participar das reuniões de trabalho e poderão ser publicados no volume.

O programa do evento trará os participantes em visitas ao Parque Histórico Nacional de Lowell, Boott Mills, e à réplica histórica do moinho Slater em Pawtucket, RI; incluirá ainda exposições, palestras em museus (New Bedford Whaling Museum) e passeios temáticos, ligando temas de pesquisa à história viva das comunidades em consideração.

Migration and Mill Work is a multi-disciplinary conference providing an overview of migrant mill work through an extended discussion of the settlement and development of the early Portuguese communities in New England.

The conference will address the waves of migrant laborers in textile and manufacturing mills in Massachusetts and Rhode Island from the late nineteenth century onwards.
