CREATOUR 2nd International Conference Emerging and Future Trends in Creative Tourism
7, 8 and 9th June 2018
University of Minho, Campus Gualtar, Braga - Portugal

The International Conference “CREATOUR 2nd International Conference Emerging and Future Trends in Creative Tourism” aims to continue the works developed in the first Conference at Curia (May 2017). It will bring together creative tourism researchers with creative tourism networks that will discuss the research and practice of creative tourism.

The information and results on the development of the creative tourism network – CREATOUR – focusing on small cities and rural areas within the Norte, Centro, Alentejo and Algarve regions of Portugal, is another aim of the Conference. The conference is organized within the project CREATOUR: Creative Tourism Destination Development in Small Cities and Rural Areas (Desenvolver Destinos de Turismo Criativo em Cidades de Pequena Dimensão e em Áreas Rurais). The overall objective of CREATOUR is to develop and pilot an integrated approach and research agenda for creative tourism in small cities and rural areas in Portugal, developing strong links within and amongst regions. CREATOUR is a national three-year project (2016-2019) funded under the Joint Activities Programme of PORTUGAL 2020, by COMPETE2020, POR Lisboa, POR Algarve and Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

The project builds on three interlinking dimensions of recent cultural and creative industries development in Portugal: (1) the development of artistic and creative industry hubs (“arts centres” or “creative factories”) in repurposed former industrial buildings or in restored heritage sites in many small cities and rural areas; (2) growing attention to the (re)vitalization and valorization of tangible and intangible cultural traditions throughout the country; and (3) the growth and development (and heightened visibility) of culture and design-related creative products in Portugal.

Keynote speakers

Patrick Brouder (University of Brock – Canada)

Rural Resilience through Tenacious Tourism

Abstract: In the 21st Century rural regions with a strong tourism profile are no longer seen as laggards but as leaders. This is, in part, because tourism has proved to be particularly tenacious vis-a-vis many traditional economic sectors thus helping increase regional resilience through balanced diversification. In this presentation, I will share my experience from a decade of research in a diverse group of communities and show how tourism has become an integral part of community economic development with the added benefit of increasing social resilience in rural areas.

Brief-bio: Patrick is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Tourism and Hospitality, University of Johannesburg, South Africa, and a former Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies, Brock University, Canada. He currently serves as Chair of the Economic Geography Study Group of the Canadian Association of Geographers and on the Steering Committee of the International Polar Tourism Research Network (IPTRN). He is a resource editor for Tourism Geographies and an editorial board member of Polar Geography. Originally from Ireland, Patrick has conducted a decade of tourism research in Sweden and Canada working closely with local communities.

Susan Luckman (University of South Australia – Australia)

Creative Tourism and Contemporary Global Demand for the Local

Abstract: Craft and design-led creative economies are presently enjoying a moment of growth, driven by consumer demand for unique, innovative and/or handmade objects, and the rewarding experience of making. Craft-led creative economies enable all kinds of opportunities for de-centralised creative practice beyond the urban locations previously privileged as densely clustered sites for creative ‘industrialisation’. From a tourism perspective, they also fit neatly in with consumer desires to ‘discover’ the different, unique, distinctive in the face of globalised supply chains and increasingly identical retail brand offerings. This paper will explore how distinct local economies and their craft products and practices are emerging as valuable points of difference in the global travel market.

Brief-bio: Susan Luckman is Professor of Cultural Studies in the Schoolof Creative Industries and Associate Director of the Hawke EU Centre at the University of South Australia. She is also Cheney Fellow at the University of Leeds. Susan is an interdisciplinary cultural studies scholar whose work is concerned with the intersections of culture, place and creativity. Susan is the author of Craft and the Creative Economy (Palgrave Macmillan 2015), Locating Cultural Work: The Politics and Poetics of Rural, Regional and Remote Creativity (Palgrave Macmillan 2012), co-editor of The ‘New Normal’ of Working Lives (Dynamics of Virtual Work Series, Palgrave 2018), Craft Economies (Bloomsbury 2018), Craft Communities (Bloomsbury 2018), and Sonic Synergies (Ashgate 2008), and of numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles and government reports on cultural work, creative industries and creative micro-entrepreneurialism.
