Está aberta a chamada para comunicações da Conferência Internacional Portuguese Orientalism(s). A conferência aceita propostas (para painéis e comunicações) que ofereçam perspetivas transdisciplinares, comparativas e inovadoras sobre os múltiplos orientalismos portugueses, privilegiando-se o entendimento de “orientalismo” como área de saber, disciplina ou campo de produção científica sobre o(s) Oriente(s), cuja emergência cronologicamente se situa na segunda metade do século XIX.  As propostas devem ser submetidas até ao dia 1 de maio de 2018, através do e-mail tecop.orion@gmail.com.

The International Conference Portuguese Orientalism(s) is an initiative of the Texts and Contexts of Portuguese Orientalism: The International Congresses of Orientalists (1873-1973) research project (PTDC/CPC-CMP/0398/2014) hosted at the Centre for Comparative Studies of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon.

The conference welcomes works that examine the impact of the scientific trajectories and institutional affiliations of a Portuguese orientalist intelligentsia on their discursive constructions of the so-called Orient. How this field of scientific and intellectual production (the so-called scholarly literature) intersected with the field of cultural production is also an issue this conference intends to address by giving visibility to the agents operating in each field and the networks they established or were engaged in.

Other topics are welcomed but are not limited to:

  • The Portuguese-language cultural production in the genealogy of Oriental Studies (19th and 20th centuries)
  • The institutionalization of Oriental knowledge in 19th-century Portugal and its link to colonial scholarship and governance
  • Portuguese-language scientific production and the transformation of colonial knowledge, perceptions, and rule
  • Portuguese Orientalism(s) and empire(s)
  • Scientific culture and the making of the Orient in 19th- and 20th-century Portuguese-speaking world
  • The role of the Portuguese-speaking world in the epistemologies of the Orient
  • Portuguese Orientalism(s) at the crossroads of History, Memory, Myth
  • The role of the printing press in the creation and dissemination of orientalist knowledge produced by Portuguese-speaking agents
  • Translating the Orient: the reception of Oriental literatures in Portuguese-language contexts and translation as cultural image-making of the Orient
  • The interconnection between politics and ideology in the discursive formation of the Orient in the Portuguese-speaking world (19th and 20th centuries)
  • The interplay between the politics of power and identity, ideology, and utopia in the formation of the Portuguese Orients/Orientalism(s)
  • Images of the East in Portuguese-language cultural production (19th and 20th centuries)
  • Orientalism, feminism, and religion in the 19th- and 20th-Portuguese-speaking world
  • Gender, travel writing, and the Orient in the Portuguese-speaking world
  • Portuguese languages and literatures of India
  • Orientalism as an aesthetics in the 19th- and 20th-Portuguese-speaking world
  • Portuguese Asia in the visual arts (19th and 20th centuries)
  • The Orient in Portuguese-language cinema, theatre, music, and visual culture
  • The Portuguese-speaking world in Asian cinema, theatre, music, and visual culture
  • 19th- and 20th-century Orientalism in the global world (globalization and post-modernism)

Schedule

  • May 1, 2018 Final deadline for submission of panel and paper proposals
  • June 15, 2018 Notification of acceptance of panel and paper proposals

This conference accepts panel proposals and paper proposals (individual presentations).

The conference languages will be Portuguese and English.
